The Team

Martin Aboitiz - Founder / CEO

An entrepreneur and venture investor. Martin Aboitiz has had a productive career in entrepreneurship and venture management as an engineer with extensive experience in information technology, sales and marketing and venture finance. He is an active angel investor, having participated in approximately 15 companies to date. Prior to Healthjump he was the Founder and President of Intermedia Comunicaciones SA. Martin transitioned from engineering to venture management at Bun SA, an industrial snack food production and marketing company in Argentina that was acquired by Pepsi Foods International in 1993. As President of Bun he enabled the company to become a prime acquisition target, conducted the sale negotiations and worked under new management during the transition. Later he founded Intermedia Comunicaciones SA where he was President and CEO. Intermedia was one of the first ISPs in Argentina (the ISP group was sold to SkyOnline in 2004) and currently remains an IT services firm with an international presence. Early Healthjump ideas sprung from data integration and SaaS services developed for Intermedia customers.
Martin has been an angel investor with varying degrees of participation in successful ventures in and out of the United States. Notable investments include EXOS Inc. acquired by Microsoft to provide the base technology for the MS Flight Simulator force feedback control, Telecom Americas a wireless telco acquired by TelMex, and Netegrity a web security software company; these companies provided returns in the 3x – 10x range. Other less successful venture investments were made over the years that are not as well remembered yet provided valuable venture experience.
Martin holds a MS in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University and a BS in Civil Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Martin has served on various Board of Directors and industry trade groups over the years and is a Regional Chair for the MIT Educational Council (honored with the Morgan Award). He is married with four children, a habitual cyclist and light bicycle mechanic. Done

Cliff Cavanaugh - Founder / CTO

A healthcare technology expert and software developer. Cliff Cavanaugh is a programmer working in computer sciences since 1999, and has focused exclusively on Health IT since 2005. He has created custom software products for all sizes of medical institutions including large healthcare systems to small private practices. He has pioneered several visionary technology products in the healthcare space including analytics products, cost saving provider SaaS as well as robust client-server software. Cliff is co-founder and CTO of DataTrade Solutions, a provider of Health Care IT services to thousands of providers via health systems and practices across the United States.
His extensive healthcare IT experience includes the deployment of an Electronic Health Record platform which eliminated all dictation costs for C.A.S.E.P. a large Philadelphia private practice. He has developed cost saving Health IT software and interfaces for organizations such as Mercy Health System and Main Line Health. He pioneered the development of an EHR reporting and analytics platform that is being deployed amongst some of the largest health care networks in the country including Catholic Health East and Trinity Health.
Cliff’s extensive knowledge of healthcare legislation and regulation has led to consulting engagements at healthcare organizations including Mercy Health System, Lourdes Medical, St Mary’s Health System, Southcoast Health System, and numerous smaller private practices. He as also assisted the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid in the development of Clinical Quality Measures for Meaningful Use stage 3. His development knowledge ranges from mobile environments including objective-c (iOS) to web languages including PHP, Java, Python, Javascript, ASP.NET, MySQL and client/server languages including C# and MSSQL.
Cliff is a member of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and has hosted talks on the area of Health IT expertise at Temple University and Nextgen‘s own Users Group Meeting.
When away from his computer, he volunteers regularly at his local church and enjoys biking, hiking and generally keeping in shape. Done

Jim Rowland - Founder / Chief Sales & Marketing Officer

A proven COO and health IT sales executive Jim is a technical enthusiast, talented salesman and proven COO, with a variety of expertise that foster his abilities to grow a business and manage a team.
Jim’s career in IT started at Innovative Control Systems where he shifted from engineer to management and finally a sales manager. As a sales manager, he was able to triple sales in his assigned territory. By taking this dormant territory and building it up to keep and exceed the pace of the rest of the country, the company reached record annual sales. Jim also assisted the company in the launch, design and testing of an outdoor payment kiosk by helping to align the needs of the clients with the functionality of the software. This product created a brand new business model for industry and is still widely used today.
To take advantage of the sudden shift in medical record keeping, Jim moved his talents to Healthcare Technology and co-founded the Health IT service company, DataTrade Solutions. In three short years, he and his Partner grew the boot-strapped company from the ground to a million dollars in revenue. Jim was the COO and championed all sales efforts. Jim tracked and delegated operational tasks and built a talented team of support analysts and project managers to create a new proactive service offering to the industry. Jim also has a talent for effectively communicating customer and product requirements to developers and engineers. By incorporating methods that worked in proven IT support setting into a customizable environment, such as electronic medical record system, he created a win-win service offering for both DataTrade and the clients it serves.
Jim has completed Microsoft SQL server training and keeps himself current by attending various industry symposiums, trade shows and user group conferences.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters. Jim is also a Member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Done

Shanti Aboitiz - Founder / Patient Advocate

A trained nurse with business operations experience. Shanti has a mix of nurse training and experience combined with business operations know-how. During his studies, he did clinical work in Emergencies, Pediatric Emergencies, Internal Medicine, Oncology and Traumatology. He then worked in the Emergencies and Intensive Care units of the Hospital General de Hospitalet in Barcelona and the Emergencies unit at Hospital Clinic de Barcelona. Recently he has been Director of Administration and Finance at Intermedia Comunicaciones SA, an IT consulting firm based in Buenos Aires.
Shanti has spent 3 years as an Emergencies and Intensive Care nurse, working in areas such as Internal Medicine, Traumatology, Surgery and Psychiatry. His responsibilities included triage, holistic caretaking of patients while under medical care and management of the relations between patients and doctors. He also worked as an assistant nurse in a Psychogeriatric ward, providing basic living assistance to elders with psychiatric afflictions.
Shanti has spent the past 2 years as part of the management team at Intermedia Comunicaciones where he initially took responsibility for the treasury and finance department of the company. Shanti then played a major role in the restructuring of the company and added to his responsibilities the supervision of the human resources department. Due to his efforts, the company has become more streamlined and versatile, and better prepared for the ever-evolving state of the worldwide IT business.
Shanti has a nursing degree from Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and has completed graduate studies at Universidad de Buenos Aires and Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales.
In his spare time, he enjoys ink drawing and oil painting as well as camping and biking, and is particularly passionate about “asado”, the art of Argentine barbeque. Shanti sits on the Board of Baco A. C., a non-profit organization for the development of the arts. Done

Mark Ribeiro - Founder / Director

A wall street trained banker with a dozen years of experience. Mark has over 12 years of bulge bracket investment bank experience, primarily in New York City and in the Technology, Media & Telecom (TMT) space. He has lived and worked in the US, Brazil, Singapore and Hong Kong and has a unique global perspective to his thought process. He has worked with a wide variety of clients as an investment banker, research analyst and advisor from small Internet startups to $100b+ market cap public companies.
His career started in Equity Research where he primarily covered the Internet sector at both Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley where his mandate was to identify the best Internet companies and assist in taking them public or to find M&A opportunities for them. His research teams have enjoyed various rankings in Institutional Investor, Reuters & Latin Finance. Post technology bubble, he moved to Merrill Lynch’s investment banking group where he continued his coverage of the TMT space, and was engaged in a wide variety of transactions including sell-side advisory, buy-side advisory, carve-outs, leveraged buyouts, special situation workouts, IPOs and both investment grade and high yield debt financings.
Mark has an MBA from Yale University, MA in Financial Economics and Policy from American University and a BA in Economics from Dickinson College.
He enjoys an active life style playing squash, skiing, cycling, international travel and is a member of the NY Society of Mayflower Descendants. Done

Brian Murphy - Digital media and mobile

A digital media and mobile executive. Brian Murphy is a digital media and mobile executive with over 17-years of experience at AOL that include pioneering work on some of the company's most iconic consumer products and properties, such as AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and AOL Mail. He has served in a variety of product, strategy, operational, international and managerial roles over the years at AOL, with extensive experience in leading large scale transformation initiatives. He is passionate about mobile and creating first-class digital consumer product experiences, and has won company awards for teamwork and culture.
Most recently, he was the Senior Director of AOL's global mobile product development group during a period of industry-beating growth and transformation as the team created mobile apps and web presence for virtually all of AOL Inc's family of brands (including TechCrunch, Huffington Post, Engadget and Moviefone) as well as developed new 'mobile-first' brands, such as Editions (an early tablet magazine product). From 2012 he also played this role for AOL Mail, a major source of traffic and revenue with over 20M members, as revenue/user grew by 20%.
At AOL Mobile, Brian directed a multi-year pivot from a declining legacy revenue stream to a rapidly growing new business model and overhauled mobile analytics, introducing the first cross-platform metrics at the company. His expert analysis of mobile trends inside and outside the company influenced product strategy. Under his management AOL Europe's mobile revenues grew from nothing to a $4M run-rate in less than a year. He also directly led the Partner Management, Analytics and Product Support teams for Mobile and AOL Mail.
Brian holds a BA from Yale and resides in the DC metro area with his wife Kristin and children (twins). In his spare time he enjoys travel, reading voraciously, Arsenal FC, music discovery and amateur mixology.customers. Done

Dr. Eliot Heller - Physician Engineer

A cardiologist and established Chief Medical Information Officer. Eliot is Physician Engineer with over 15 years of experience in creating, building and managing new solutions and teams that add automation and productivity in the healthcare space. He is in his 3rd role as Chief Medical Information Officer at St. Peters University Health System after similar roles at Mercy Health System and Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, where he was also Chief of Cardiology.
Eliot started his medical career as the Director of Nuclear Cardiology at the Bronx-Lebanon where he eventually became Chief of Cardiology. As Chief of Cardiology, he implemented one of the earliest cardiovascular imaging and structured reporting system for echocardiography, catheterization and nuclear cardiology working with McKesson to develop their nuclear cardiology reporting. He then led a team to interface this system with the hospital information system creating one of the first orders to results workflows for a hospital cardiology department.
He later became the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) at Bronx-Lebanon. In this role he led a project to convert to Eclipsys Sunrise leading all aspects of configuration and honoring the institution to become a premiere reference site for the vender. He was heavily involved in HITECH Stage 1 Meaningful Use Certification and with NCQA Patient Centered Medical Home status. As CMIO at Mercy Health System, he was the clinical lead for the conversion of four system hospitals to Meditech Client Server and the achieved HITCH meaningful use stage 1 certification for all 4 hospitals. He was the clinical lead for implementation of its NextGen patient portal and subsequent upgrade of more than hundred outpatient offices. He has recently begun his third CMIO role at St Peters University Health System.
Eliot has a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University and an MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed a 4-year Fellowship in Cardiology at Yale University where he was awarded a research grant from the American Heart Association.
Eliot resides in New Jersey with his wife and 2 daughters. In his spare time he enjoys traveling, running, biking and skiing. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Unitarian Universalists Congregation of Princeton. Done

Patrick Kocsi - Private Equity Investor

An experienced private equity investor. Patrick is a Senior Managing Director and Head of the private equity division of a large financial institution. He leads a team of 25 investment professionals manages a $ 2.5BN private equity portfolio consisting of mid-market investments and funds. Further, the group seeks to invest $ 150-200MM a year in co-investments and growth transactions in middle market companies across industries known to his institution.
Patrick joined his company in 1991 in the Financial Management Program in the Plastics division. He worked in The Netherlands, France, and the US. In 1996, he joined financial division working on acquisitions in the US, Brazil, and Germany. In 1997, Patrick moved to the private equity division and began investing in industrial, media, transportation, as well as technology companies. He has served as a director or observer on over a dozen boards both private and public.
Patrick has a Bachelors Degree in Finance from Boston University and a Masters Degree in International Relations from Tufts University.
Patrick is married and father to two children. His hobbies include listening to classical music, photography, competing in triathlons, tennis, skiing, and driving his sports car on the racetrack. Patrick is both a US and an Austrian citizen. Done

Maria Malavenda - Healthcare Consultant

An established healthcare executive and consultant. Maria, is considered a visionary with proven successes in the area of strategy, corporate development, marketing and operations for multiple organizations across the Healthcare, Life Sciences, and Media & Entertainment industries. As a Management Consulting Partner, COO & CMO, she has raised over $2B in seed, venture capital, Private Equity, IPO and post IPO financings' and achieved considerable returns for investors. She has founded, grown, turned around, bought and sold companies and taken them public.
Maria started her career in Product Marketing for Johnson & Johnson Medical where she eventually became Vice President of Sales and Marketing. As Vice President, she successfully launched OR Surgical Packs which achieved a 75% market penetration within an 18 month period and became the highest revenue generator for the company.
After a successful career with Johnson & Johnson, Maria co-founded the Internet Strategy Consulting Firm, Tribute International, which grew from 0 to $25M in three years and was acquired by Microsoft. Maria then became a Partner at Deloitte and later Accenture’s Healthcare Strategy Practice where she successfully led several Merger & Acquisition, Strategy & Restructuring projects and brought 3 companies through an IPO process. Maria later joined Monster.com, a client of hers, as VP of Strategy & Corporate Development. While at Monster, Maria led market expansion into countries within Europe, China, and South America, launched new products focused on Video and Voice integration, and structured media deals with NYTimes, Comcast, Verizon, Disney, and Viacom.
Maria continued to follow her passion as an entrepreneur and launched 2 healthcare start-ups: BenefitAllies, a HealthIT platform focused on provider cost and quality transparency for the patient which was acquired by Restat; and Pediatec, a wireless medical device utilizing analytics to identify movement, blood flow, heart and respiratory rate and distress.
Maria is passionate about assisting and mentoring developing businesses to improve their performance and avoid mistakes. Maria is a judge and mentor to MIT’s Venture Mentoring Service, YouthCities, and MassChallenge, is Business/Finance Chair for Open Hub, and Board Member for Lovin'Spoonfuls, Quincy Center for Innovation, RegenerEX, and World Health Congress. She is the recipient of multiple national, industry, and organizational awards for superior leadership, performance, and contributions. Maria is an Advisor to Health Jump, ViralGains, and Ubiqi.
Maria holds a BA from Brown University, a MBA from The University of Connecticut School of Business, and attended Harvard Business School's Executive Series.
She lives just outside of Boston in Hingham, MA. In her spare time she enjoys creating new culinary dishes fusing various cultural aspects, participating as an actor for North Shore Improve, and mentoring for various Youth Initiatives. Done

Ajit Medhekar

Ajit is a co-founder and Director of PayActiv, Inc., was a founding team executive and Vice President at Alliance Semiconductor (IPO), founder and CEO of Lara Technology (acquired by Cypress) and emPowertel Networks (acquired by IP Unity). Most recently Ajit was a venture partner at ARCH Ventures. Ajit has been successful in launching, developing, and investing in numerous high technology companies. As an active angel investor, board member and mentor for the past 20 years, Ajit has developed a keen sense of what it takes to succeed.   He has been a member of the Band of Angels, the Sand Hill Angels and a Charter Member of TiE Silicon Valley.  Ajit holds BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from MIT and has co-authored thirteen patents.
